The Combat Boat 90 from DockstaVarvet in Sweden, now in its 22 year of service, is now subject to an upgrade of drivelines and mission critical systems.

Upgrades include Navionics, CAN Bus standard and Ullman suspension Seating. The bridge has been slightly altered in order to fit the Ullman Arctic Seats, which were originally designed for the CB90.

With several hundreds CB 90s and several thousand Ullmans Seats sold world wide it is now our pleasure to show the combination, fit for higher speeds and higher seas.

“Something you have to learn to live with”

“I am a medical doctor by profession, but being an inventor is more of a condition, something you have to learn to live with if you can’t beat it”, says Johan Ullman of Ullman Dynamics.

He has been behind a number of innovations that took him beyond his job as a naval and air rescue doctor in Sweden (which he describes as “high adrenaline”). These include portable hands-free sets for cellphones which started Bluetooth and ergonomic designs for office chairs. However, it’s his research on the impact of high speed craft on the body that he’s best known for, an interest that started some 27 years ago.

“I saw many otherwise fit, healthy 19 year old kids leaving the service with back problems after serving onboard motor torpedo boats”, he said. Four years later he watched a big trail bike being ridden across country and realised people naturally handle bumps “by using both arms and legs, not simply sitting down”.

The mid-1980s saw him involved heavily in research. At the time there were no feasible methods of measuring shocks on the spine. Many people had tried skin-patch or band-fastened sensors but these didn’t match skeletal movement. The only accurate method was drilling tiny pins into the vertebrae of subjects to wire them up before subjecting them to graded impact in the lab.

“A real breakthrough was mounting the accelerometers to a kidney belt that stands on the rim of the pelvis. That actually gave us very good measurements, he said. “It’s now being used worldwide.”

Although he carried on alone for most of a decade, a step forward came about when an old shipmate, now the technical director of the Swedish Coast Guard, talked the Swedish Navy into letting them have a boat to test out the theories.

In 2000 cooperative research with the US Navy (which had admitted that “enormous” training costs were being wasted due to back problems), showed that even standing crew suffered more, not less, impact than the boats themselves.

“It didn’t seem right, so we kept checking the data, he continued. “Although you naturally stand with slightly bent legs to help absorb the impact, the boat starts falling before you do, so by the time you reach the deck, which has likely come to full stop, you can have almost straight legs.” Occasionally this results in impact to the spine almost three times of that hitting the boat, he explained.

The now well known straddle seat, which helps people brace themselves with both feet on the floor, proved to be the answer. When the Swedish Coast Guard couldn’t interest its chosen boat builder in installing these seats, it asked Dr Ullman to supply them directly and the company Ullman Dynamics was formed.

The rest is history, with a wide range of Ullman seats becoming standard specification for many naval and coastguard vessels across 56 countries.

From my side, we chose Caribe as our RIB supplier as I had experience of the speed, durability and performance of the Caribe brand, which made it the perfect high-speed response craft for my marina.

Originally we did not specify the Ullman seat option due to the increased sale price, but after Caribe convinced us otherwise, we are now very glad that we did.

We have piloted our RIB in the dark, in high seas and flat seas, for rescue, pleasure trips, piloting and regatta race management, and the Ullman seats have made each of these occasions far more comfortable and convenient. As is often the case, it is not the strength of the vessel that dictates speed/performance, it is the comfort of the passengers. And in this respect the Ullman seats have enabled long trips to be carried out smoothly, despite aggressive wave action.

Using the covers as well, the seats have so far withstood 1.5 years out in the UAE sun, and were also used all summer with heats exceeding 55 degrees. We have yet to have any complaint or issue with them.

So I would indeed recommend Ullman to any commercial operator looking to specify a work boat.

I am fairly confident that i would not be able to fish offshore without the Ullman seats.

The seat itself controlls and dampens the shock to your entire body, all of that being siad the Ullman’s, it is a family company, have given me first class personal attention up to and including enquiring as to the exact disc and exact problem with each disc to try and help with the placement of the seat as it relates to the steering wheel and throttles.

The Ullman’s actually helped with the ergonomics of the helm location.
Besides that, the crew all fight over the second seat, my wife usually gets to ride there but saturday for instance one of our larger friends rode there, he admits to 370, not sure that is quite the exact number but maybe close.

Ullman Safeguards Olympic Flame

 

The Choice of Champions

The Olympic flame arrived from Athens to the UK on May 17 and has since travelled across the British Empire. During the final stretch former English football captain David Beckham operated the 70 knot vessel to safely deliver the flame carried by the rising football star 16 years old Jade Bailey to the Olympia Stadium.

¨The Bladerunner is a “stabilized, air entrapment monohull”, designed by world leading naval architect Lorne Campbell, developed and built by British yard Ice Marine. It was chosen, not primarily for its extreme and futuristic design, but more important for its extremely smooth ride in any sea conditions.

 

Failure was not an option

To further enhance the safety aspects – failure was not an option – the Bladerunner was equipped with Ullman suspension seats. This to make sure that even in case of significant waves the procedure would be successful in parading the flame with dignity on its last leg to the Olympia Stadium.

A special seat was built by Ullman Dynamics to safely support the torch-bearer in her near standing position up in the bow of the boat, without anything to hold on to during the transit, except for the torch.

Large colored spotlights on the stern lit up the smoke ejecting from the “jet engines”. Spray was created by a water intake device on the stern and spraying water to the sides harder with increasing speed. The spray device reduced top speed of the boat from 72 to 42 knots despite the two 300 engines.

David Beckham actually drove the boat himself most of the way even though he had never sat foot on a speed boat like this before training for three days before the event. During the last stretch in the canal the builder and former world champion boat racer Jeremy Watts had control and finally docked.

The river Thames can be challenging to navigate with a small speed boat due to large waves cased by current against wind or wake from other vessels. Hence the Bladerunner comes equipped with Ullman Suspension seats, the same seats that are the standard on the London Metropolitan Police boats and on the Royal Marines Offshore Raiding Craft, both used in fair numbers for the security during the games. Even the Bladerunner’s Aerodynamics Steering Console was designed by Swedish M.D. and scientist Dr. Johan Ullman.

This last part of delivering the flame to the Olympic Stadium required months of planning and rigorous security. In the end this action scene, watched by more than 900 million people world-wide, went 100% according to plan as boat and crew fulfilled the mission with dignity.

I have a very good relationship with my boat dealer, who just “built” a Revenger 25 with two of your seats. I have tried it and must say they are absolutely fantastic, I definitely want those on my next boat…. The question is: which boat !!?

High-Speed Boat Operators – Challenge the Industry

The 5th High Speed Boat Operations Forum has just been concluded, with more delegates and more boats than ever before.

HSBO Forum once again successfully gathered the elite in professional High-Speed boating to test cutting-edge technology, discuss challenges and opportunities with the sole purpose of moving the professional boating industry forward.

One challenge discussed was the spiraling cost of procurement. Many see the benefit of collaborating with like-minded organizations to bring down costs, learn from others’ mistakes and successes and generate better results at a lower accumulated cost. After all, we live in a world with more joint exercises and ventures taking place than ever before.

“Just look at the joint operations going on off the coast of Somalia” – said Johan Jorstadius before continuing to speak about the importance of «combined and joint interoperability», a very current topic, especially in Europe.  

260 delegates from 27 countries, dressed in dry suits and tactical gear, trialed 28 different high-speed craft, flagged from Spain in the south to Iceland in the North, Finland in the East and Canada in the west, at speeds of up to 76 knots.

HSBO Forum is one of the few venues in the world where a large number of professional boats can be sea trialed at full speed, in open water and in high waves. HSBO Forum is a non profit-making, “by invitation only” event and the number of applicants by far exceeded the number of seats available. 

The scientific part of the program included the most recent advances in boat operations, hull design, human factors, shock exposure, crew training and on-board equipment.

Amongst the presentations that received especially good feedback, was the Finnish Navy’s experiences of high-speed boat tasks in “Operation Atalanta” – contemporary real- world experience of pirate hunting – quite literally an old game using very new tactics. 

Special interest was also attracted by the presentations on

– methods for optimizing the acquisition process,   

 – suspension seats performing vastly differently with some actually multiplying shock exposure, whilst others were proven to significantly reduce exposure and enhance operational efficiency,     

– helicopter and ship sniper protection/support

– officially recognized crew training programs.

Uniquely, a special interest group has been formed by and for the delegates, to continue exchanging experiences and consolidate knowledge of High- Speed Boat Operations and Acquisitions.

Al utilizar soluciones que no cumplen las directivas, el empleador se expone a que le interpongan demandas de reclamación.

La mera afirmación de que un asiento amortigua los choques no basta para cumplir la directiva.

  • Ajuste de altura donde resulta útil, para los pies.

Por lo general no es preciso ajustar la altura.

Si es preciso, cuando la altura de los usuarios varíe en más de 40 cm,

debería ajustarse mediante varias alturas para colocar los pies.

Los operadores de corta estatura no quieren estar sentados más abajo.

Los operadores altos no quieren estar sentados más arriba.

La altura a la que quedan los ojos cuando el operador está sentado es fundamental y apenas varía entre personas altas y bajas.

(El ajuste de la altura mediante la reducción del recorrido de la suspensión es contraproducente y puede ser peligroso, porque hace que los asientos bajen hasta alcanzar su tope inferior.)

 

  • Usados por operadores profesionales en operaciones difíciles durante muchos años en más de cincuenta países sin ningún fallo.

Varias organizaciones de profesionales han evaluado desde el punto de vista científico y a conciencia distintos asientos y han tomado los asientos de Ullman como referente. Los certificados de estas agencias se encuentran disponibles a petición del cliente.
